The Renovation Plan Blog

24 April 2010

Thank you for finding my new blog – The Renovation Plan Blog.

My Intention in starting this blog is to help people with one of the major decisions in the life ( after committing to a life partner and purchasing a home or business premises) and that is to renovate, do home improvement, extend it , do a home addition, refurbish a building or whatever term you would like to apply.

If you do not do this type of work regularly it can be quite a daunting process.

From all my experience the best advice I can give whether it is a $2,000 bathroom renovation or a $50 million dollar building project, is to take your time planning the project and clearly define what you want and how it is to be carried out. The intention of the renovation plan blog is to assist you with your renovating and home improvement project.

Some may see the planning as procrastination when our first reaction is to just jump in and take action, however what planning does do is to focus you attention on what you really do want before you get anyone else involved.

By you being clear on what you want, your project will be more attractive to architects, project managers and builders or contractors. They are all action people and hate being delayed while clients keep changing their mind about what they want. Yes they might get paid a little more for any variations you create, however it is the flow on effect to the project which will ultimately affect how much the total project will cost you and the time it will take

A well thought out and planned project will cost less and be completed in less time.

The big difference I have seen between the commercial building industry and the residential or home building industry is the the commercial builders all prepare detailed plans of what they are going to do. Both in writing clear briefs in words and communication and also in time planning.

It is not that the first time you write a plan or prepare a time program that this is the exact way the project will happen, it is just the process forces all the parties to understand what the general concept of who and when the project will be built. They are living documents which will be constantly updated during any building project.

So Plan First,  Save Money,  Save Time.
